Support for Learning

The Prep school is fortunate to have five teachers working with students who need support in both Literacy and Maths. Mr. Toby Bowles, Mrs. Sian Hawkes and Miss Vanda Fernandez teach literacy skills needed for reading, spelling, writing, hand writing and keyboarding. Maths support is provided by Mrs. Libby Reynolds and Mrs. Cora-Anne Mann. We know that students learn in a variety of different ways and the school is able to provide a great number of resources for small groups of children.

Smart Boards are used for many of our lessons. Computer games, such as Word Shark 3 and Nessy, are used to reinforce spelling skills; board games and specific software programmes may be used to help the writing process. However, it isn’t all fun and games in Support for Learning. A lot of hard work is accomplished here, as well. Most of the children who receive Maths learning support work with a small group of their peers and teacher.

During the pull-out classes, basic maths concepts are the main focus, as well as key learning objectives from the curriculum. The children love the extra attention that they receive. They are given a variety of hands on materials to work with and this allows them to make sense of abstract maths concepts.

Cayman Prep has dedicated students who make excellent progress with Support for Learning. Our teachers use many techniques that enable children to find ways in which they best learn. We are very proud of our students and teachers and we thank parents for committing the time that is needed to help their children.
