The High School Curriculum
Key Stage 4
Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11) is an exciting and important stage in a student’s educational journey. It is the point at which students begin to shape their own curriculum through subject choices, allowing them to pursue areas of interest while continuing to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed for future success.
At Cayman Prep and High School, students follow a two-year programme leading to internationally recognised qualifications. Students study for IGCSE qualifications through Cambridge International Education and, in some subjects, GCSE qualifications through the Welsh Joint Education Committee (WJEC). These qualifications provide an excellent foundation for further study, university and future careers.
The Upper School curriculum is designed not only to prepare students for success in public examinations, but also to develop the skills, values and work habits needed to become lifelong learners. Through a rigorous and challenging programme of study, students are encouraged to stretch themselves beyond previous levels of achievement and take increasing ownership of their learning.
Choosing a Pathway
Key Stage 4 is the first time students are given the autonomy to shape part of their own curriculum. Alongside a core programme of study, students select option subjects that reflect their strengths, interests and aspirations
Students are encouraged to consider their individual talents, interests and future ambitions when making choices. Throughout the options process, guidance is provided by subject teachers, form tutors and pastoral leaders to help students make informed decisions about their educational journey.
A Broad and Balanced Curriculum
All students study a core curriculum consisting of:

- Mathematics
- Science
- Religious Education
- Physical Education
- PSHE
Subject choices may include:
- Art and Design
- Business Studies
- Computer Science
- Drama
- Economics
- Geography
- History
- ICT
- Music
- Physical Education
- Travel and Tourism
Students also participate in Vertical Learning and Study Skills as part of the wider Key Stage 4 experience.
Preparing for Examination Success
Years 10 and 11 mark the beginning of formal examination courses. As students progress through Key Stage 4, the curriculum becomes more specialised while maintaining the breadth needed to support future pathways.
Students develop increasingly sophisticated subject knowledge alongside the independent study skills, organisation, resilience and self-discipline required for academic success. Through expert teaching, high expectations and personalised support, students are encouraged to achieve their full potential and prepare confidently for Sixth Form study.
Depending on the subject, courses may include written examinations, practical assessments and coursework components. Full details of individual courses can be found in the KS4 Curriculum Guide.
Pastoral Care and Academic Support
Every student belongs to a tutor group led by a specialist Form Tutor who provides both academic and pastoral support. Form Tutors play an important role in monitoring student progress and wellbeing and are the first point of contact for parents.
Students also take part in the PSHE programme, which supports personal development, wellbeing, healthy lifestyles, economic understanding and preparation for life beyond school. The curriculum is regularly reviewed to ensure that it remains relevant to the opportunities and challenges facing young people today.
Additional support is available through our Learning Support team where appropriate, helping students access the curriculum, achieve their best and develop as independent lifelong learners.
Beyond the Classroom
Students are encouraged to complement their academic studies through a wide range of enrichment opportunities. Participation in clubs, leadership roles, service activities, sport and the arts helps students develop confidence, resilience and teamwork while contributing positively to the wider school community.
Looking Ahead
Key Stage 4 provides the foundation for future study in Sixth Form and beyond. Our broad range of subject choices allows students to build upon their existing skills, interests and talents while opening doors to new opportunities. Through academic challenge, pastoral support, careers guidance and enrichment experiences, students develop into critical and creative thinkers, responsible citizens and independent learners who are well prepared for the next stage of their journey.
