Founded in 1949, the school has functioned for most of its recent history as a Prep School. By 1997 the school had extended its Middle School section to a High School once again and students took their first IGCSE (International General Certificate of Education) examinations in 1999. In 2003 the first Advanced Level examinations were taken; Cayman Prep and High School was thus able to provide a continuous programme from Kindergarten (students aged 4) to the internationally recognised Cambridge University Advanced Level examinations (students aged 18).
