Years 10 and 11

Ages 14-16

CPHS offers a two year course in Years 10 and 11 leading to the British based IGCSE (International General Certificate of Education) or GCSE (General Certificate of Education) examinations. These examinations are internationally recognised and the syllabus content caters to a broad range of ability. Some subjects are examined at both core and extended level and some have a coursework component, contributing a certain percentage towards the final grade in that subject.

Our learning support teachers provide individually tailored specialist support and attention for students requiring learning support and students designated as gifted and talented.

Our purpose built facilities include fully air conditioned classrooms, computer laboratories, two well equipped science laboratories and music rooms with a variety of instruments. Our library is well stocked and available during school time, at lunch and after school.

The large multipurpose hall is used for a variety of activities including netball, badminton, gymnastics, school assemblies and other school functions and our large sports field is used for football, rugby, cricket and many other outdoor activities.

Core Subjects in Years 10 and 11

All students must study the core subjects of English, mathematics and science. In addition, all students will study PE and will sit the GCSE RE short course which they begin in Year 9. Students will also be given PSE and SAT lessons.

Other Subjects in Years 10 and 11

The A-level curriculum is normally a two-year course; students take examinations set by British examination boards. Papers are set and marked externally and the qualifications obtained are recognised and accepted worldwide, including the UK, USA, Canada and the Caribbean. Depending on the particular subjects taken, the examining board will be either the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) or the Welsh Joint Education Committee (WJEC).

Students opt to take a maximum of four subjects in Year 12 and most subjects in that initial year will be examined at AS (Advanced Subsidiary) level. Depending on the degree of success achieved at AS level, the usual route would be for students to continue with three of these four subjects in Year 13, at the end of which they will be examined at A2 (Advanced) level. However, it is quite feasible to finish this course of study at the end of Year 12 and progress on to Higher Education having gained suitable credits for acceptance at university level.

Many Canadian and US Community Colleges accept I/GCSE or AS qualifications for entry into their programmes. The full A-level programme is considered to be equivalent to advanced placement in the US and the AS (Year 12) programme is considered to be equivalent to the standard level in the IB Diploma programme. Most universities in the UK and Caribbean require full A-levels for entry. Our Careers/Examinations Officer helps students to match their abilities and interests with appropriate universities. To date all our students have gained acceptance to universities and colleges of their first choice.

There are Community Service and Physical Education elements in our curriculum. The Physical Education programme offers a variety of options including the Duke of Edinburgh Award, sailing, diving, squash, swimming and life-saving. For our ethics programme, a United Church minister discusses current local and international ethical and moral issues with all Year 12 and 13 students.

Extra-curricular

High School - all years

A most attractive aspect of the school is the wide range of extra-curricular activities which caters to the varied interests and talents of our students. Netball, volleyball, cricket, football (soccer), rugby, swimming, gymnastics, dance, sailing, orchestra, choir and drama are just a few of the clubs available at or through the school. A detailed schedule of these activities is provided by the school at the start of each term.

The following annual field trips are eagerly anticipated in the High School:

› Year 7 students are taken on a 3-day series of local trips which adds to their previous knowledge of Caymanian history, culture and wildlife

› Year 8 students go on a 3-day trip to Cuba

› Year 9 students go to London for a week

› Year 10 students go for a week to the lush tropical rain forests of Costa Rica

Students are accompanied by a team of experienced teachers on each of these trips, after which trip related projects are completed by students, marked by teachers and presented to parents and fellow students.

Based on their career choices, one week of work experience in Cayman is arranged for each of our Year 10 students. This worthwhile experience sets them in good stead for future career choices.

Concerts, theatrical productions, school fairs, cycling trips and many other activities are undertaken by the school or under the auspices of the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) as part of our on-going fundraising drive. The school is always a beehive of activity.
